We sat there watching the dog show on TV. As they panned over the border collies I mentioned the prospect of getting another animal KNOWing full well that my wife would say something about we have enough. I then suggested we trade the cat for a new pup and she said she didn't want to endanger the world with Lady SpitFire. So I suggested we trade Butch for some new blood.

That is when I realized that if Butch ever went to another home it would have to have only one human in it. No children, not even a couple. At this point in Butch's psyche he can only have ONE HUMAN - His!

Oh how I do not love the tail chewings. It generates FEAR and makes me Nuts. Well you can guess what just happened. I did as my boss's-boss said. Then I did what the client said. That effort created two. The second is what will be used. The system automatically notifies the user when I mark the job complete. I re-sent that notice after I created what he asked for in the first place. I forgot that everyone would be notified so the result was inevitable. I shouldn't complain. It came as a question. So i cam put whatever Spin I like on it.

Before and After Ike Photos

A research team from the U.S. Geological Survey just returned from a mission to survey the affects of Hurricane Ike. Two new before-and-after photos were released today. More will be coming within a few days.

This photo shows what Bolivar Peninsula looked like on September 9, 2008, five days before landfall. Notice all the green grass, the small beach area and the homes along the coast.

The yellow arrow is simply a point of reference.

The second photo was taken two days after landfall. This area was swamped by a storm surge which was at least 14' deep. (Final surge measurements will be available after a storm analysis report is finished.) There is no grass left near the coast, the sand was pushed back across the highway and most of the homes are damaged or completely gone.

The USGS team photographed five different areas along the coast: South Padre Island, Matagorda Island, Galveston, and Chenier Plain and Isles Dernieres in Louisiana. Check their website for more information.

I am someone who helps the newbies. It was not so long ago, no it really wasn't, that I was new to this place.

I learned quickly who ask to get useful answers. So after someone is shown where the supply rooms, the refrigerators are, the fax machines and oh yeah - the copiers is I take a few more minutes showing the new folks where the ice machine is - oh yeah a major help to enjoy your drinks; where the Other microwave ovens and refridgerators are; and which other supply rooms can supply what. If ya need something - ASK !

Look around, under rocks, in empty cubicals, it 'other' supply rooms. If the results are empty, it will be ordered - what ever ya need - just ask. I will help them with anything. WHY? Because I know that my coworkers love supplying answers.

If I don't know the answer, I will find out who does - just ask! Often people wonder and eventually ask why I seem to know so much about so many different things. The secret - is being available to people to ASK questions thru you, learning the complete answers and getting the people you have just helped to ASK more questions. Being the Go-Between twixt Questioner & Questioned affords me ample opportunities to LEARN!

As Gustav is slowly destroying its way into our neighboring state Louisiana. I know where Iwant to go - HERE! From all the comments of the weathermen, we might get a fair amount of rain when the tropical storm that Gusta will become.

I just watched video of water from the Industrial Canal that winds its way thru New Orleans "over topped" levees and degrade them to fail. Now is a good time for me to bark to the levees being so brutally attacked to - Stop..Sit.. Stay...Good Levee..Nice Calm Waves.. Good Girl!

So yes THIS pup 'da Pup' is SITting @ his PC console, STAYing @ home typing this post! Just to be sure I may spend some time loading a backpack - one for Butch, a lighter one for Charles and anything left for my backpack - prolly her laptop!

Many of the posts I write am what we call dollar posts. Well this one is a tad bit different. I have heard the radio ad twice now, and am thinking seriously about getting the service. I wonder if the GPS unit would fit on the cat, Ms. Lady Spitfire - Well I have a back pack for Butch, so I may need to get one for Ms. Lady Spitty. Could it be true? Might we discover where she goes when she leaves the house early in the Morn' and returns about 9 in the evening? Am I nosy? YOU BET - !!!

Da_wife & I know each other's Gmail sign on. That can pose an interesting scenario.

Imagine that da_wife in online and in the midst of chatting. Then I sign on to her ID. My initial intent was to check her email. She receives a chart showing who will be in her learning class and WHEN. It is the WHEN I am interested in. I just need to know her schedule.

But then the chat box opened and I saw the perfect opportunity to add something. The only mistake I made was saying that the comment was from Da_Pup.

You notice that the system comes to a crawl right after lunch. You can hear many of your coworkers complain about the same thing. Someone contacts the help desk to see if anything can be done. Well they say that they have done what they could - things should be different now. Not necessarily better - but different!

Now its slow ALL the time!
Just like the word "CHANGE" that is being offered by all the Presidential candidates. Bush gave us change - We went to war. He did as he damned well pleased, regardless of what his staff told him; regardless of what his allies told him; regardless of what the United Nantions told him; regardless of what his Dady told him - he wanted a war - and he made one!
He played hooky from being a responsible soldier, but Bush has no qualms about sending YOU TO WAR!

No Pattern

I tried to track the barometric pressure against how severe the joint pains were, but I cannot find any correlation. The only good point i have seen is that the pains lessen every 4-5 days then the pains start over again. When the pains first return I am trying to determine if they are more severe than "usual" or just seem that way because I have been "pain free" for a short while. By day 2 of the pain cycle, all HELL breaks lose as the pain seems to not respond to any medication. This continues for 2-3 days for reasons I cannot find.

So what's the good (if any) news? Well i finally got things straight between my family doctor's staff and my insurance company. Actually I was the one who was not "in the loop". Earlier this week, I received a cal from an excited young woman who seemed ready to come out of her skin. It seems that several other insurance reps have been trying to contact me over the last few weeks. At least that's what she told me. I guess they were calling the house number because the message recorder for that number is finicky at best. if they had called either my cell or my wife's cell we would at least have an indication that we missed a call, who is was from and WHEN. But back to the phone call. She wanted to determine if in fact I was willing to pay the price for the bone-building medicine that my Dr.'s office had requested. I was lead to believe that it would cost more than I could justify for a 3 month supply - and it would have if I got the medication thru my local pharmacy. But...

If I got the meds thru the mail from the folks that supply most of my meds, then the price was less than a quarter of the pharmacy price. WHEW!

Oh - its still a lot of cash to be sure.

So we will see if these meds are worth the cash - I sure hope so! The instructions remind me to continue supplementing my system with extra calcium. The purpose of these meds is to increase my body's ability to build bone mass. To that end i am taking Calcium as a tablet & a liquid,as well as eating calcium rich foods. Contrary to the Office Watering Hole Wisdom, TUMS will not do me much good - even for stomach problems. It seems that my RNY surgery changed which kind of calcium I could absorb - only Calcium Citrate and TUMS is Calcium carbonate!

The instructions warned of dizziness, which I did feel about 20 min after taking the shot - but the dizziness only lasted a minute or so. That tells me I can be just about anywhere when I take this shot - no side effects that would require me to have privacy or stay at home. I am to take the meds at about the same time every day, so we agreed (that unless the Dr. sez otherwise) I'll take the meds at night. The worst that could happen is to get drowsy and fall asleep early - something I do from time to time anyway!

This Won't Hurt - MUCH!

Earlier this morning one of my systems came to a crawl. After I could resume my work I heard others (over the cubical walls) having similar problems. This should have been a warning of impending doom, but I was not immediately affected & I continued.

Ten minutes ago they tried to patch the problem after having sent out an email that the system "may" hang up for a second or two. Well I never saw any glitches, but now that have sent out word that they'll be taking this system down for several hours "unscheduled repair time." Here's hoping that it will be less than an hour. The memo listed all of the systems that will NOT be affected, but I have no reason to use any of these "other" systems.

Conversations and articles used at the learning center are anything but political. We (for the preservation of our own jobs) try to discuss ANYTHING with these children EXCEPT topics that are might bring on an arguement. But can I help it if a child happens to be looking over my shoulder at my blog and see a Meez in clown-face make-up wearing an Obama t-shirt and dancing in front of an Obama '08 poster. The teacher asked why the kids were wiggling about and chanting "Obama...Obama...Obama...", so I told her. We got good laugh about the kids dancing, as well as realizing what would happen at home when the kids mentioned this to their parents...(and where they learned it!)

...I still do not understand what I need to do. From the discussion the head nurse had with me last week, I think the tests confirmed that I am well on my way to all sorts of calcium deficiency problems... osteo-sumthin-or-other, That is where I have lost too much calcium and I am set to fall apart - literally. The Dr. wants to give me 4 shots of Calcium that my system will definitely accept, but the insurance company refuses to pay for them. Sheesh, the 4 shots are just under a Grand. So why should they complain.

The good news is I was able to get better pain meds with a little more freedom in how many I can take in a day. Now if we can only get on to the next step and reduce the sources of the pains!

Did I mention - OUCH!

To Create Mulch Sooner

The compost pile in our back yard is growing week by week. I know that today is the middle of winter but the pile should still be able to decompose more than it is. I think the problem is the lack of Nitrogen and the always too much water that creates a lack of Oxygen. I know it seems odd to say a lack of Oxygen, but when you stack the leaves in a pile, let it get wet (rained upon for days), and add more leaves. As the pile gets bigger it tends to compress. So it is time for action!

I will continue to spread the pile out over my corner of the yard, move the weeds and vines to the bottom (yeah, yeah, yeah, I know you aren't supposed to use weeds or vines in a compost pile - but I do and it works for me), then sprinkle on some of the fertilizer we bought last year. I'll keep rebuilding the pile sprinkling water between levels and adding the fertilizer as well as fruit skins and some egg shells. Oh well scratch the egg shells. I just found out that the collection of shells I had set aside was in the trash that was picked up last Saturday. Such as the plans of a Husband. By using the fertilizer we have on hand I won't have to worry about how much I use. I can't add too much because i know I'll be adding more leaves this weekend. Then we can go out and buy a New Container or two of fertilizer.

I have been wanting to replace the soil under the rose bushes. Last year we fought against yellow spot on the rose bush's leaves. One of the steps you need to do to insure the problem does not recur is to remove and dispose the soil that surrounds the plant. Many of the tainted leaves fall to the ground and the disease can return to the plant after the treatment wears off. But by treating the plant AND removing the tainted soil, you have fewer problems in the future. The soil under the spruce tree is very enriched with the decaying "leaves" of the evergreen and as a result is very acidic. Rose bushes Love Acidic soils. I believe it is called a Win-Win solution.

Sooner Sounds Better Than Later

Dr. S has been MY doctor since 1993 and my wife's since 2000. He has helped both of us deal with many, many medical & financial difficulties. He was instrumental in my getting a Gastric-Bypass operation. And now his staff is in the midst of convincing the BIG BAD Insurance company to pay for a preventative treatment. My complaints about my pains were primarily aimed at what seemed to be a lack of action by both the Dr.'s & Insurance, when in fact Dr. S had limited choices at best.

Dr. S has prescribed some rather strong medicines for my pains. He has mentioned to be several times that until the medical world can accurately measure & quantify PAIN, he would move cautiously about what he let me take.

We were both waiting on results from a few bone scans I had recently. From the results of the Bone Density scan, the Dr. has prescribed a combination that DOES help a tad bit. It seems that the Dr./Insurance-Co are convinced I want MORE meds as "feel good" pills. The only "feel good" I want is to Not HURT Like that poor sleepy, blind kitten with the long tail trying to escape the big room full of rocking chairs - OW no matter where ya go!

Usually I am not one to complain to the public - by voice - cuz

1. I'd prolly get arrested for using such language in public

2. It serves me no good

3. I'd be ignored by as many as possible REAL Fast

4. Straining my voice to complain will just create more pain!

5. So complaining thru a blog - gets it out of my system

Now if I can only get the Big Bad Insurance company to pay for the Shots Dr. S says I MUST have, then there would be oh so much less reason -

Well I did just what I was instructed to do. Remove your slacks and put on this here gown. we don't want to take an X-ray of your belt or zipper. hey! Sounds logical to me. I had the X-ray bone scan and several hours later I had the radiation scan taken. As memory serves me (and it was only last week) I laid on a stable table.

As it turns out the X-ray had a smudge where my hip joint should be so I was back for another X-ray of my pelvic area.

This time as I laid perfectly still on the table, the table SHOOK! When I asked "why the diff" I was told it allowed for a more precise X-ray!

..To Find Out Why It Hurts

The more often I tell the doctor and/or his staff that it hurts like HELL the seemingly more they comment that no one can hurt THAT much. This is a difficulty for someone that can tolerate oh so much pain. When the doctor needed to do some minor surgery on my tuccus (you know - the backside of my front) for an infection that refused to heal, I leaned over my shoulder and asked when he was going to start?!? His staff let out a GASP, as he commented to stop moving, he had already begun cutting into the skin. Didn't I feel anything?I told him that I had felt his fingers pressing against my skin as if to steady his hand, but I did not notice any pain of a scalpel slicing into ME! I am flabbergasted that the very same doctor doesn't seem to understand the level of pain I am feeling.
He has prescribed various medicines that would knock an elephant to the ground. I take the strongest dose allowed by law and often it is not enough. The Dr. questions my actions/complaints when I tell him that 4 are not enough or that 1 at a time just doesn't give me the relief I seek.
So here's hoping that the bone scan tests tomorrow will give me some answers - that we can use to find the pain relief I need

I had seen the sign that this business was open. As a matter of fact the sign in the front window said Grand Opening. Finally I stopped by and checked out the menu. Yep - there it was right at eye level - Chai Latte - 20 ounces - so I ordered one.

Wow! This is what I had been told it was supposed to taste like. As I watch Starbucks make my drinks, I notice that each component is already watered down and that they use SOY milk - healthier, less fat, less taste. I have called their hot line 800-23L-ATTE several other times to complain - of getting coffee when I ordered and paid for TEA - of getting a cup of cinnamon flavored water - err someone forgot to add the Chai mix - of rude behaviour - and not having any of the breads the sign says they have - I don't care what time of the day it is - they offer it, they should have it! If it is late in the afternoon, should I expect to get less than a full cup - hey can they help it if they don't have what I want in stock - who am I to blame them? How dare I write a post about BAD SERVICE.

Back to the original point. Dunn Brother Coffee makes the kind of Chai tea that is worth driving across town to get. Last Saturday after my wife had finished work (mid morning to mid afternoon), I suggested we go to the Dunn's Coffee bar for some tea. She agreed mentioning how many times I have bragged about the tea. So we headed out thru Saturday traffic. When she had reviewed the entire menu, she simply said "a Big Chai Tea". She was as delighted as I have been.

The other plus (at least for now) is that their largest size with tax costs 1 cent less than the Venti Chai tea latte from Starbucks before tax.

Yeah - I'm a happy camper - Great Tea - Good Service - with Real Milk - served Damn HOT - that costs less - on the right side of the road.

So why does that matter? Because they won't let you make the left you need to get to the Starbucks - the 4 lane divided street is now a 2 lane - all on one side so they limit the turns. If I want to stay away from a ticket, I need to make a right, then u-turn on that street, go thru the light and turn left to get to Starbucks WHEW!

On my way home SB would be on my right, but the traffic is so much worse then that getting back into traffic after buying a cup of tea - is TERRIBLE and oh so not worth the effort.

For me and my world - Dunn is the Way to Do It!

A young child's body is discovered. A report is made to the local authorities. The report is followed up and the body and the container it was found in are brought to a place where they can be carefully reviewed. This could be a report anywhere, but instead it is near Galveston, Texas. The County Sheriff's Office is looking into about 250 leads as they try to figure out Baby Grace's real identity. That is commendable, but I wonder if this much effort, this much attention, this much tax dollars shouldn't be spent when ANY body is found.
I have been told is other news stories of a body being found in an empty lot. As an example, this happens on a fairly regular basis in Acres Homes. AH is a subdivision on the North side of Houston. The residents claim it is a serial murderer, but the Houston police blow-off such comments, send the body to the morgue and life goes on. We don't hear any more about the body except that is probably was a young black woman and AH has mostly black residents. Where is the National effort to find out who this was, where she lived, WHO KILLED HER, why she was dumped in THAT particular field (where other bodies are dumped). Hell - if that is going to happen on a regular basis, maybe someone needs to collect a fee. What? How dare I speak of creating a business of skirting the law; collecting cash after someone has killed another - Why not? The police aren't gonna do anything except bury her somewhere else. Oh yeah - she's black and not a Cute, Little Girl, found near a City that must protect its status as a SAFE place to Visit aka Tourists!
A news report this morning spoke of someone donating a new dress to bury Baby Grace. An effort is underway to collect money to pay for a memorial and burial. People are willing to stand-in for the yet unknown parents/friends of Baby Grace.

It is almost funny how people are caught complaining that the politicians seem to take or at least raise a ruckus about the smallest thing; blowing something way out of proportion usually in an attempt to cover reality. Well not it is the general public (or at least the quoted public) that are taking the extremes as their own soapbox.

Some folks want us to leave the troops their until the "War" is Won. Can you say NEVER? While other folks are screaming Bring 'Em Home Now! I think the useful answers lie somewhere in the middle. They can be found if people take time to listen to what the ground pounders are saying.

So very many of the troops being interviewed from time to time, wonder how many times they will be asked, enticed or ordered to go back to the war. From the emotions they express, it is obvious to me that they on one hand totally exhausted while on the other hand unwilling to leave their fellow soldiers. Never Give Up or Give In! Never Say Die! Do What Ever You Must To Keep Your Buddies Alive.

At the start of the war, we were told that you go to war with the equipment you have, not with what you want. That excuse was good for the 1st few years, but why not get serious about this war:
1. Bring MORE fresh troops aka the Draft
2. Give ALL the troops the best equipment available, even if it means denying our politicians their perks and frequent pay increases.
3. Don't give a politician any funds to campaign while we are war. In Peacetime they can have the extra ca$h. During a declared war, it all goes to the troops!
4. Hell as far as I am concerned the hell with the draft, make Everyone serve in the military. If they are too frightened to fight, let 'em pushing paper, pack parachutes and load gun clips!
5. Let's get downright deadly serious about this war. It ain't no Sunday fling, so direct a greater portion of our GNP towards the war!

The large sign near the top of the building says "Thrift Shop". At lease it did the last 50 or so times I bothered to look. The building used to be a Safeway food store, before it became a Hobby Lobby, then migrating into a Michael's. All of those names tell you that this is ONE LARGE store. The great news about this place is that their profit margin is 1 - 2 cents per article.
My niece R and I will go there tomorrow and look for jackets and sweaters. I usually do not like to go with my wife, because she is on a scooter and I WALK. I may have lost over 200 pounds, but I still have Rheumatoid Arthritis. That means that if I stand still or walk very slowly, my joints SWELL UP. I will make sure that R & I move quickly with an attitude of get in - get it - get out!
Even if something we buy doesn't fit well enough, we won't be out too much ca$h. Why? The clothes are marked way down from any other store. These prices are truly pennies on the dollar. I'll post the full address later, so suffice it to say it is on State highway 6, North of Interstate 10, across from the Neighborhood Walmart. That's North of Clay Rd and South of Keith Harrow.

The Ouch continues. I have tried many combo's of how much and when to take the pain meds, with little success.
Some good news is that I have more meds to add to the mix, tho one of 'em is only a few weeks worth. I find the muscle relaxin' med to be quite helpful when I lie down in the middle of a weekend day.
When I stand for very long or simply do too much work my calves, ankles and shoulders begin to ache! Many people can simply sit for a while, and they are good to go. Sadly I MUST LIE down to get any energy back or to keep from hurting in other places.

The New Math System...

...has a few bugs. But what system doesn't.
While I was trying to use the new math system, I was unable to bring up any choices for the 5th & 6th grade level. The procedure for grades 1st thru 4th, 7th & 8th is to select the grade level. You are then presented with either a list of topics or a list of levels (Level 1, Level 2, Level 3,...) after which you can select either a Worksheet or the Answers. at THAT POINT you press SUBMIT button. This brings up a link to a PDF file. When you select the PDF file, Windows kicks in and gives you the option of OPEN or SAVE. So you press Open and you get to see the worksheet or answer sheet. At that point you can either review the document on the screen or print that dang thing!

The is a rumor that there is a 3rd option that I am not using. Hey, if it was available and it could help me help the kids, I would gladly use it. But I no find-ee.

The recently discovered feature (you do understand that a feature is an undocumented BUG - right?!!) is that for the 5th & 6th grade levels you select the grade then press SUBMIT. Then you can select a topic and a worksheet or answer sheet.

I am 'supposed' to take my pain meds every 5 (count 'em 5) hours. Well since that is about how long it takes for any one dosage to take effect, that gives me about 5 minutes of pain relief - which is unacceptable to me. So in search or a longer pain free moment, I usually take most of the pain meds early on. Sometime in the middle of the day to sometime in the early evening the pains are hardly noticed. It also helps if I walk about often!

I was told I needed to learn the new math system. I was told (as the boss was told) that the system is fully functional, loaded to the gills with useful lessons, and easy to maintain. Oh well, back to the drawing board.

I signed on, reviewed my options of which most are currently "under construction". When I needed information to help a client, I gave this new system a ring. Unfortunately, two of the levels are empty. Heck they are not even "under construction" just empty. I was told that there would be instructional material AND worksheets AND answers all as a separate selection. Oh well, back to the drawing board.

In the past, my colleagues and I were reminded to give the clients loads of homework. [I am not sure if homework is the best word to use here as these clients are not mere children. But I am giving the client written information that needs to be read, evaluated, documenting any problems that were encountered and create a draft copy of their resolutions to the questions presented in the written information. It is an opportunity for the client to show his/her understanding of our discussions.

Well, I did and was called on-the-carpet for such a foolish action/thought. OK, I'll give less next time. I am sorry. I apologize. Feel better now? I foolishly asked how many documents I SHOULD give and was told "I do not know". Yet, he who does not know, decides that what was done was not right! I believe I am perfectly right to say

AAAAARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH! Ok now I feel a little better!

That was earlier this week. I prolly won't have any returning clients 'til next week. I'll use the new system as best as I can. Send 'em home with SOME homework along with a note about why I think the client can evaluate, respond to and document certain problems and wait for the Shit to hit the inevitable fan!

It is oh so frustrating to have so many things on your platter and then get stuck in a problem that drives you crazy. I had a list of location records I needed to copy and modify. I did as i was instructed, but I kept getting an error. So I changed my process and got the same error.

This morning I find out that I was supposed to get that error and the error will be resolved outside my realm.

OK so now I get to review the list and finish everything regardless of any errors that choose to rear up and spit at moi!

I have driven past a particular walking path for over a decade, promising myself to walk this path, maybe later - on another day. I have gone to one of the ends and walked a different portion of the path, a portion that goes thru the Family section. That path is dirt n gravel, near a stream, with several pathways back to the parking lots. I had taken a short walk with Da Brain. I became concerned for my safety when I saw a work crew from the county jailhouse. So with Dean brewing in the Gulf we took a stroll. My wife on her scooter, da pup Sir Charles on a leash checking on all of us and anyone who passed by. I strolled alongside the pair trying to maintain a good pace. We got a few hellos, and a few good days as well as a few stares at the fact that I was wearing dress slacks and a Long Sleeve shirt with the sleeves rolled down!

The tomato plants have worn themselves out. They are starting to look rather ragedy. Several leaves are yellow and shrivled, BUT they ARE still producing Tomatoes. Now we get to decide when to pull them out & plant new, young, virale plants. There is a volunteer plant in the same raised bed, so we will have tomatoes during the transition. I will probably add a few more plants in the bed. The sad news about the few plants we have in place is that they are not producing as many tomatoes as we had been lead to believe (on the package info). They HAVE been the size I prefer, fist size. Too much larger and they mess up a good sandwhich. Much smaller and they are either bird food or just don't taste right. As for small, we do have some cherry tomatoe plants [all in the same Big Pot] and they are producing 2 or 3 a week. I think we'll try those again and this time build a raised bed for several plants.

The raised beds are a good idea that has gotten better. I bought a rolled up fence where the fence boards are attached to a plastic strip. The strip is an inch high and is attached 2 inches from both the top and bottom. The ends of the fence are tied together to forma circle, or joined to other fence pieces to make a larger bed. On the inside we attach wire cloth that has 1/4" squares. This provides for great drainage, easy & cheap construction and a better view of root activity and any bug infestations. On the bottom of each bed we put some almost composted leaves, followed by a sand/dirt combination, a dash of fertilizer and good soil - the High Priced Soil. We add plants and top off the bed with bark chips or shredded eucalytus.

Over the last few weeks we [which will soon be corrected by the real worker of the two] have bought and planted several plants, picked about a dozen tomatoes, pulled loads of weeds, given the rose bushes and tomato plants whatever they were lacking and otherwise sat back and admired our work, Was it worth the effort? Yes - Absolutely! Was it worth the co$t? Now that's a completely different matter.

One of us is the 'designated' Chief Finan¢ial Offi¢er, while the other has taken on the role of 'designated' Chief $pending Officer. The daily review of funding raises hopes for one and fears for the other. Ahh such is life!

...To Stop The Itching

When I get bit by a skeeter or flea my system reacts strongly. The site at which I got bit, swells, turns red, and itches like the dickens. Sadly if I satisfy the itch, the bite site expands, as the skin deteriorates. The itching lessens but I have opened my system to infection and with my impaired immunity systems a simple infection can become a major problem. At the least I will get a scar, at the worse I will develop a sore that will take several weeks to heal. If I have too many of these sore, my system reacts with a case of cellulitis. That will either take 10 days of antibiotics (Septra & Clindomyacin) or a two weeks stay at the hospital.

So as you can see getting stung or bit by a bug can be a major event in my life. How can I prevent all of this mayhem you ask? The easiest way is to take an antihistamine when I first realize that I have been BIT. I have even tried starting the day by taking an antihistamine tablet when I knew I would be outside. The problem there is that I become drowsy, which is not usually a problem ... usually!

..To Find Relief

It is interesting how we notice pain. It seems that the more intense pains [usually in my shoulders and lower back] are what we notice and treat first.[well THAT makes sense] So we take a pain reliever [two Tylenol] and wait a few hours. I notice the back hurting less, but then I notice the pains in my elbows, knees and hands. That's when I get out The Big Guns. The problem with this medicine is it take as much as 4 HOURS to take affect.

There are days when I take the Major meds when I first wake up, then lie back down for a few hours or so hoping some pain relief will happen soon. Even on those days when I awaken pain free, I know that the RA in my joints will flare up eventually. So it is a day-by-day decision when to begin treatment.

Why be so concerned about the timing? Because I am only allowed four tablets a day. I do find however that I do not need to space out the relief over the entire day. If I take more medicine in the morning, by late afternoon regular Tylenol will work until bedtime.

All of this having been said, I am constantly reminded by our doctor to take no more than 6000mg Acetaminophen for more than a few days and preferable a limit of 4000mg on any one day. The Hydrocodone has over 600mg Acetaminophen - so it all adds up! I am trying my best to exercise more and eat a more protein enriched diet in order to need fewer meds. The search for a pain free day continues!

First ya chat with them online. Then when two of ya decide that the third person either isn't listening or just won't follow your advice, then ya just have to call her. And when ya finally get past her answering machine - OMG here it comes. Ya tell her how wrong she has been, ya talk over her words, so even if she was apologizing, you'd never hear her words, cuz you are toooooo busy YELLin at her.

Then ya gets confused for her not listening to your every word. Its almost like she has put up a wall - hmmm defensive mode - hey it works for me! Finally if all else fails, ya call in da Hubby. All of ya know how da Hubby has had problems with infections (deep vein thrombosis & cellulitis) so if ya can get him to agree with what you been trying to tell her, then maybe she'll DO WHAT YA keep tellin her to do. Just because you are not there, that you cannot see what the boo-boo looks like, that her original description may have been a tad bit over-the-top; nah - ya wait for the Hubby. Then all he says is that her friends were worried. When you opened the wound did ya treat it quickly?, OK, did ya bandage it well? OK, and are ya going to stay away from ANY source that would make an infection worse? Huh? Wait - you said YES - Great!

The Hubby's final words were kinda gross, cuz he reminded her that popping open the boo-boo, just expelled the white blood cells which were there to fight the infection in the first place. Well we can only hope she gets better AND keep on a Praying for her.

About 30 plus years ago, I trained for and became an Assistant Air Traffic Controller. No, I didn't go on strike. That came afterwards. But while I was in training, I was told often that we had to do whatever we could to learn over 650 3-letter & 3-letter-number IDs that represented airports, landing strips, military bases and points in the air (25 miles from Abilene on a heading of 30 degrees) >> I think that one is 8MG (referred to as Mustang). Most of them are named for towns that either exist Now or have existed some time in the last 100 or so years! Plus we learned in excruciating details, both the High altitude and Low altitude maps of the Ft. Worth-DFW En Route Air Traffic Control area. ,The region ranged from El Paso,Texas to East of Shreveport,Louisiana. From North of Enid, Oklahoma to just South of Waco, Texas. Got that? Then connect those places with a diamond shape. Yeah that's right!
